11/13/19: Construction updates, Bioretention projects

I. SUPPORT INFORMATION

Construction of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) building remains on schedule.  Overaa Construction has completed erecting the structural steel columns. Installation of steel horizontal beams and steel framing for the roof will start later this month and continue in December, and pouring concrete slabs for each floor will follow.  While the steel work continues, Overaa will pour perimeter grade beams for the first floor and footings for the large trellis, art and engineering patios, and the “bioretention” basins.   

“Bioretention” basins channel rainwater in ways that help protect the natural environment.  Specifically, these basins direct the flow of rainwater away from the impervious areas around buildings and walkways, and use soil, plants, and underground layers of gravel to drain and filter this water.  Bioretention helps prevent rainwater from overloading the City’s storm sewer system, contributing to flooding, or damaging local streams. Bioretention naturally filters bacteria, sediments, and pollutants from rainwater, improving water quality as it flows underground and ultimately to the San Francisco Bay.   

The key objective now is to make the building water-tight before the rains.  Once the walls are in place and roof is completed, the building will be fully enclosed and protected from the elements, and work will begin inside the building on electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems. 

As planned, Overaa will continue to work during the Thanksgiving and December breaks (with the exception of union holidays), to ensure that the work remains on schedule.
